The Story Behind Morals Matter
The idea of Morals Matter Education came around when I was a patient myself - hospitalized and recovering from a major surgery. During this time, there were massive errors in my EMR documentation as a patient, medication errors, a lack of education and awareness of some of my diagnoses, and incredibly poor communication skills. I felt alone, invisible, and at times even concerned about how safe my care actually was as a patient in a hospital.

At the same time, I saw the CNAs constantly on the run from being so busy, many nurses training new grad nurses, resident doctors balancing a heavy patient load, and surgeons trying to check on their patients on the very few free moments from the OR. It gave me memories that I remember quite clearly: being a new graduate nurse in the ER balancing critical patients or trying to manage a post-op complication in a patient where there were multiple teams involved. I could feel their emotions and tension, making me hesitant to speak up as someone who had been in their shoes.

Healthcare is a massive endeavor that requires so many interventions to truly change. However, I refuse to blame all the concerns on one factor or to believe that change is impossible. Morals Matter Education grew out of these thoughts: in an environment that often works against both healthcare professionals AND patients, what can we actually do to raise the bar and make improvements around us?
